Objective.

To investigate the association between red and processed meat consumption and the occurrence of new cases of insulin resistance (IR) and diabetes mellitus (DM) in participants of the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (ELSA-Brasil).

Reporting of birth defects from the Zika outbreak in Colombia, 2015-2017

Objectives.

The Zika outbreak affected several tropical countries in 2015 and 2016, requiring the creation of intensified surveillance strategies for microcephaly and other neurological syndromes. The effect of the Zika outbreak on the reporting of birth defects in Colombia was evaluated from the perspective of the national surveillance system.

Evolving child and adolescent mental Health and development programs in Chile

This analysis reviews the situation of child and adolescent mental health in Chile, organizational determinants, and the initiatives and interventions implemented to enhance child development despite the country’s inequities. Progressive development of national mental health plans is covered, from the country’s first plan in 2000, to growing the number of mental health professionals and the training they receive, such as MhGAP, to the implementation of “Chile Crece Contigo,” whose preliminary evaluations are starting to show some effectiveness.

Tobacco use in adults and observance of antismoking legislation in Costa Rica in 2015

Objective.

Estimate tobacco use in adults in 2015 and observance of the provisions of the General Law for the Control of Tobacco and its Harmful Effects on Health and its regulations.

Methods.

A cross-sectional study was conducted using the Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS) in homes, with national representation based on a three-stage probabilistic sample by sex and area of residence.

Social determination and determinants of malaria: a systematic review, 1980-2018

Objective.

Describe how the ‘social determination of health’ approach has been applied in malaria studies around the world.

Methods.

Systematic review of original studies published from 1980 to 2018. Six search strategies were used in ten multidisciplinary databases, and in libraries and repositories of seven universities in Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. PRISMA guidelines were followed, methodological quality was evaluated according to STROBE criteria, and a qualitative summary of the results was conducted.

Critical pathway of women facing violence: an integrative review

Objective.

To identify the critical pathway taken by women facing domestic violence in the world in their search for help.

Method.

An integrative review was performed. LILACS, MEDLINE/ PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus, and Web of Science databases were searched until year 2017. The following were inclusion criteria: full text available online, Portuguese, Spanish, or English as language of publication, focus on the theme of interest, and answering the guiding question (Which critical path is taken by women facing domestic violence?).
