Washington, D.C., 24 September 2026 – HEARTS in the Americas strengthens primary health care through better hypertension control and cardiovascular risk management. Ministries of health lead implementation alongside health professionals and scientific and academic partners, with PAHO’s technical cooperation. Within PAHO, this initiative is led by the Noncommunicable Diseases, Violence and Injury Prevention Unit (NMH/NV).
To document the initiative’s results and implementation experiences, NMH/NV and the Pan American Journal of Public Health joined forces to produce the Special Issue HEARTS in the Americas 2026, highlighting country experiences and the contribution of PAHO’s technical cooperation.
Prepared by implementation teams, ministries of health, and academic partners, the articles include effectiveness studies, implementation evaluations, economic analyses, and examples of innovation in health services across the Region. They examine progress, challenges, and the conditions needed to sustain improvements. Continuous quality improvement is a central theme, alongside the evolution toward integrated cardiovascular, kidney, and metabolic care.
