Risk factors and control measures in measles outbreaks in countries of the Region of the Americas, 2017-2023

Objective

To document and compare risk factors and control measures for the largest measles outbreaks in the post-elimination era in the Region of the Americas. 

Methods

Description of risk factors such as vaccination coverage, notification rate of suspected cases, measles incidence, and a summary of control measures for major measles outbreaks in six countries from 2017 to 2023. The analysis also includes a review of outbreak characteristics (time, place, and person). 

Sensitivity and specificity of epidemiological criteria for the case definition of congenital syphilis in a retrospective cohort in Brazil

Objective

To assess the sensitivity and specificity of the modified criteria for case definition of congenital syphilis implemented in 2017, which excluded treatment of the sexual partner as a necessary condition for adequate maternal treatment. 

Scalable policy adoption and sustainable implementation of surgical care in the Americas

On September 29, 2023, the Republic of Ecuador convened a meeting to address surgical system strengthening and urge political leaders to invest in surgical infrastructure. The meeting included experts in health diplomacy, innovative financing, implementation strategy and national surgical plans. The event occurred in parallel with the Sixtieth Directing Council of the Pan American Health Organization, Seventy-fifth session of the World Health Organization Regional Committee for the Americas.
