A retrospective review of facility-level obstetric complications and stillbirths in southern Haiti, 2013 – 2016

Objective.

To assess the incidence of obstetric complications—eclampsia, dystocia, cesarean section, postpartum hemorrhage, and stillbirths—in hospitals in southern Haiti in 2013 – 2016 and to discuss implications for improvements to the surveillance of birth outcomes.

Homicides in young people and social inequalities in Mexico, 2017

Objective.

Assess the association between social and economic conditions and homicide rates in young people between 10 and 24 years of age in Mexico in 2017.

Methods.

This ecological study looked at the social inequalities associated with homicides in the population 10-24-year-old population in 2017 in Mexico, using secondary data sources for deaths by homicide in each Mexican state. Social inequalities in health were studied by measuring absolute and relative inequality gaps. Mortality rates were estimated using Poisson regression models.

Development of an online tool for sodium intake assessment in Mexico

Excess sodium intake is associated with adverse health effects, and reducing its intake is a strategy that improves population health. However, estimating sodium intake is challenging and new options for assessment are needed. This review describes the design and development of a web-based, publicly-accessible, dietary sodium intake screening tool (Calculadora de Sodio) for individuals in Mexico.

Archival data review of intimate partner homicide suicide in Jamaica, 2007 – 2017: focus on mental health and community response

Objective.

To identify social and behavioral patterns and mental health concerns associated with intimate partner homicide-suicide (IPHS) in Jamaica through an analysis of media and police reports.

Methods.

This was an archival data review of police records and print, radio, and television reports of IPHS incidents from January 2007 – June 2017 in Jamaica. The 27 cases found were qualitatively analyzed using pre-identified codes and open coding to generate themes and patterns.

Action to improve nutrition in the Americas

With the goal of ending poverty, promoting prosperity and well-being for all and protecting the environment, in 2015 the United Nations adopted the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), thus ushering in a new era of international cooperation and national efforts to meet the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development. The nutrition agenda is permeated by 6 of the 17 SDGs and focuses on the second goal of ending hunger, achieving food security, improving nutrition and promoting sustainable agriculture.

Situation of public laboratories manufacturing antivenoms in Latin America

The situation of public laboratories manufacturing antivenoms in Latin America was analyzed, based on the results of a workshop coordinated by the Pan American Foot-and-Mouth Disease Center (PANAFTOSA) of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). Nine countries in the region have 12 public laboratories that produce and distribute antivenoms for use against different venomous animals.

Special excise tax on food and beverages and its impact on inflation in Mexico in terms of dynamics, persistence, and change of regime

The objective of this research is to study the strength of transfer, the transitions, and the persistence of the special excise tax on products and services (known by its Spanish acronym, IEPS) applicable since January 2014 to high-energy foods and soft drinks, and the effect of the tax on the annual inflation rates for these foods and beverages
